***One
year of IEW experience required***
This year long virtual class is for 2nd
year IEW students
(Class begins week of September 13)
Pre-requisite: Students MUST have had one year of IEW prior
to this class.
Knowledge of and
practice with units 4 and 6 is a necessary pre-requisite to enrolling in this
course.
This
course presents the IEW models and stylistic techniques (a variety of new ones
are added this year) while allowing for ample practice and reinforcement. Embedded in lessons each semester is a
considerable amount of editing practice.
Fall semester-- (Part
1): Units 1 and 2 are reviewed, as well
as all dress-ups and openers. Moving into Unit 5 (writing from pictures),
students will learn about “decorations” and a few more sentence openers. We will then move into units 4 and 6 (report
writing), ending the semester with Unit 8 (the essay model) as we write
introductions and conclusions for what we finished in Unit 6. Lots of editing practice is sprinkled in
throughout this semester.
Spring semester
-- (Part
2): We begin this quarter with Unit 7 (inventive writing), where students will
write five paragraph papers from interviews they conduct. Dual ‘ly’ words, invisible who/which, and
invisible ‘ing’ openers are some of the stylistic techniques we will focus on,
as well as silly similes when we brainstorm fairy tales into fictional letters.
Attention will then turn to style recognition and imitation as we compare works
of literature. Here, we will refine the
invisible “which”. Finally, the story
sequence model will be reviewed as we delve into the last IEW unit, the
Critique Model, where students will learn to critique books, as well as
movies.
