Writing with Structure and Style (IEW -- Level A for Beginning Writers), 2020-21

Writing with Structure and Style
(IEW -- Level A for Beginning Writers)
for ages 9-14

(Class begins Thursday, Sept. 10)
(Online class via Zoom)

IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) offers a comprehensive system for teaching structure and style in writing. Students who lack confidence and skill will blossom and increasingly grow in both of these areas as they learn to implement IEW’s easy-to-learn system of writing in a very positive and patient classroom environment. Growth in foundational writing skills, as well as in the use of style, should be noticed in a relatively short period of time.

There are nine units of study in all. This semester, students will learn to make key word outlines (Units I and 2) and focus on the creative side of writing as we study Units 3 (summarizing a story) and 5 (writing from pictures). In the Spring, students will turn to the factual side of writing as they summarize references (Unit 4), write library research reports (Unit 6), and formal five-paragraph essays (Unit 8). Unit 7(inventive writing) will also be covered. Unit 9 is covered in the 2nd year,
level B.

This class is appropriate for both those who are new to IEW as well as those who have had some IEW in the past. Each week, students will receive guided instruction in creating a key word outline from source texts and will work together to produce a bank of words that are to be used in that week’s writing assignment. Stylistic dress-ups and sentence openers are introduced throughout the year as the student demonstrates proficiency with what has been learned up to that point. These dress-ups, which include ‘ly adverbs, strong verbs, quality adjectives, and more, will be added one at a time as a student masters those previously given. Homework will be assigned weekly and will entail completing paragraph(s) begun in class, as well as a grammar page involving labeling parts of speech on sentences.
For the child who would benefit from structure or who lacks confidence in his writing, this is definitely a class worth taking!
