Saxon Math 54
Appropriate for advanced 4th
and average 5th graders
This is the 1st semester of a year-long course
offered
virtually through Zoom
Class
begins Wednesday,
September 9, 2020
Saxon 54 includes such concepts as..... .......*place value, *metric system, *word problems, *patterns, and *Roman numerals.. Adding three-digit numbers, subtracting numbers with re-grouping, estimating answers, dividing by two-digit numbers, simplifying fractions, adding and subtracting with decimal numbers are also topics that will be covered in this class.
Each class will begin with a warm-up where students will practice math facts and do some problem solving exercises, all mentally. This is when times tables are practiced.
Each week, students will be introduced
to new concepts and will complete practice problems for up to four lessons.
(The goal is to cover four lessons each week.
Some weeks may be less.) Class
time will also be used to answer any questions from the previous week’s
homework.
Homework: Generally, four lessons plus one test will be
assigned each week.. Each lesson usually has 25 problems. Students are to complete a lesson each day,
and then the parent is to correct their paper.
Students are to then try to correct the problems they missed. Any
problem they still do not understand, I will help them . The homework for this class should generally
take 1 to 1 ½ hours (including correcting mistakes) daily. Parents will need to order the Answer Key as well as the textbook to
use to correct all homework before it is turned in. Any problems a student misses should be
re-done to ensure the student understands the process.
