Writing with Structure & Style Continuation Course (IEW -- Level A)

Writing with Structure & Style Continuation Course
(IEW -- Level A for 2nd year students)
(for ages 9-13)

***One year of IEW experience required***
This year long class is for 2nd year IEW students

(Class begins Thursday, Sept. 10)
Prerequisite: Students MUST have had one year of IEW prior to this class.
Students should have a fair understanding of making and using key word outlines to write paragraphs, creating titles, the six dress-up techniques, retelling narrative stories (Unit 3), and the topic-clincher paragraph rule (Unit 4).

At the end of this year-long course, students will be able to write basic reports, write stories following the Story Sequence Chart, write a 5-paragraph essay with introduction and conclusion, write letters following the basic essay model, edit their own work, and use advanced decorations such as similes. Students will be doing lots of editing practice throughout the entire year and will generally be writing two to three paragraphs weekly.

Fall semester-- (Part 1): Writing key word outlines and paragraphs are reviewed, as well as all dress-ups. Moving into Unit 3 (retelling narrative stories), students will learn a few more sentence openers. We will then move into units 4 and 6 (report writing), writing three paragraphs each week. Our last unit of the semester will be Unit 5, writing three-paragraph descriptions about one set of pictures.

Spring semester -- (Part 2): Students will write a few more papers from pictures before revisiting our story writing unit where they will now write a three-paragraph sequel to a story we read together. Students will then move into essay writing where they will choose a subject and three topics and write a five paragraph essay, complete with introduction, conclusion and bibliography. Our final unit will be unit 7 (inventive writing) where they will write several five-paragraph letters. Decorations learned this year include similes and alliterations.
